82-year-old killer reportedly believed he was working for SBU in Ukrainian Navy officer's

Thursday, October 1, 2026 at 06:29 AM

An 82-year-old assailant, who reportedly believed he was acting on behalf of Ukraine's Security Service (SBU), killed a 50-year-old captain first rank of the Ukrainian Navy on Lyustdorfskaya Road in Odesa. The attacker, who traveled from Dnipro, allegedly caused a traffic accident before shooting the officer in the chest and then in the neck.

The incident is being investigated as a contract killing. The same officer had previously survived an assassination attempt planned for May 9, which aimed to create a narrative favorable to Russian propaganda. The perpetrator in that earlier attempt was recruited via Telegram. The 82-year-old suspect has been charged with intentional homicide and illegal weapons possession.
