Azerbaijan begins offshore work on gas field supplying Europe bypassing Russia
Azerbaijan has commenced offshore work at a field supplying gas to Europe, bypassing Russia. Four piles for the support structure of a new compressor platform were installed at the Shah Deniz field in the Caspian Sea, according to BP Azerbaijan on Facebook. The work was carried out by the vessel Khankendi.
Each pile is approximately 70 meters long and weighs 292 tons. The platform's support structure is planned for installation in the first half of 2028. The $2.9 billion Shah Deniz Compression project aims to ensure gas extraction from low-pressure reserves, with the new platform compressing gas from existing Alpha and Bravo platforms. This is expected to yield an additional 50 billion cubic meters of gas and 25 million barrels of condensate over the project's lifetime, according to contractor Emerson. Gas compression from Alpha is slated for 2029 and from Bravo for 2030, with remote operation from the Sangachal onshore terminal.
