Baltic States Urge EU to Ban Russian Grain Transit

Friday, October 9, 2026 at 03:56 PM

The leaders of Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia have sent a joint letter to European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, calling for a ban on the transit of Russian grain through the European Union. They stated that Russia has intensified attacks on Ukrainian civilians and continues to strike critical economic infrastructure.

According to the Baltic leaders, this is part of a campaign to weaken Ukraine's economy. They argue that Russia is bombing Ukrainian ports and hindering grain exports while seeking revenue from its own grain transit through the EU. Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas stated, "Our infrastructure should not help Russia finance the war."
