Blogger: Russia's diesel exports to US are minor compared to US production

Friday, October 9, 2026 at 08:38 PM

Blogger Vasily Topolev discussed the significance of Russian diesel exports to the US, noting that despite US fuel shortages, Russia has always exported more diesel than gasoline due to market factors, oil properties, and ease of transport. The US led global diesel exports in the previous year with 62 million tons, followed by Russia (39 million tons) and Saudi Arabia (33 million tons).

Topolev explained that diesel is generally easier to produce and transport than gasoline, making it a larger part of global oil exports. He noted that closing the Strait of Hormuz significantly impacts the diesel market. While Trump considered blocking US diesel exports, he faced opposition. Russia's diesel exports face difficulties, potentially leading to accumulated reserves, though Russia lacks extensive storage facilities. The current supply to the US is a small fraction of weekly US production, and global market prices are influenced by overall production, not just this volume.
