Court releases four truckers accused of unknowingly transporting Ukrainian drones

Wednesday, September 16, 2026 at 11:53 AM

A Russian court has released four truck drivers, Andrei Merkuriev, Alexander Zaitsev, Mikhail Ryumin, and Sergey Kanurin, who were accused of unknowingly transporting Ukrainian drones as part of an operation called "Web." The General Prosecutor's Office refused to approve charges of terrorism and other particularly serious crimes against them. The Investigative Committee had transferred 90 volumes of the criminal case to the Prosecutor General's Office, but the prosecutor returned the materials to the Main Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee for a new investigation.

Due to the prosecutor's decision, the Moscow City Court rejected the investigation's request to extend the detention of the defendants until October 12 and ordered their release from pre-trial detention. The men were accused of transporting explosives as part of an organized group and of an act of terrorism that caused significant damage. According to the investigation, drones were hidden in the bodies of their trucks, which were remotely activated to strike airfields. The drivers themselves insist they were used unknowingly and did not know about the drones hidden in the cargo. A mass drone attack, referred to in Kyiv as operation "Web," occurred on June 1, 2025. Trucks with hidden drones were parked near military airfields in the Ivanovskaya, Murmanskaya, Irkutskaya, Ryazanskaya, and Amurskaya regions, from where the drones took off. The drivers were detained shortly thereafter and have been in custody for about 15 months. Video footage shows residents of the Irkutsk region attempting to shoot down drones flying out of a truck.
