Egypt Tightens Suez Canal Rules for Older Vessels, Affecting Russian 'Shadow Fleet'

Friday, October 16, 2026 at 03:20 PM

Egypt has implemented new regulations requiring mandatory technical inspections and tests for vessels older than 25 years transiting the Suez Canal, according to Splash247. These ships will need to undergo inspections and pay fees in advance, potentially causing delays and increased costs. The Suez Canal remains a critical route for Russian oil exports to Asia.

The new requirements could impact Russia's 'shadow fleet,' which largely consists of older tankers. Data from the US Energy Information Administration indicates Russia was a major source of oil and condensate shipped via the Suez and Bab el-Mandeb straits in the first half of 2025. KSE Institute estimates 92% of 'shadow tankers' carrying Russian oil in April 2026 were over 15 years old, with The Insider counting at least 169 tankers older than 25.
