German intelligence chief: Germany risks conflict with Russia

Monday, October 5, 2026 at 06:43 PM

Germany risks being drawn into an armed conflict with Russia, stated Martin Jaeger, head of Germany's foreign intelligence service, to parliamentarians. As an example, he cited an attempted attack on a Ukrainian cargo plane "Antonov" at Leipzig airport, for which Berlin blames Russia.

"We must be prepared for attempts at intimidation and further interference. Nuclear threats will likely also resume," he said. Currently, intelligence does not see any signs of a large-scale attack by Russia on NATO territory. However, as Jaeger warns, "small-scale military activity by Russia" is possible, particularly in the Baltic states.
