Houthis Dig 20km of Trenches Around Bab al-Mandab, Satellite Photos Show

Thursday, September 17, 2026 at 02:26 PM

Satellite imagery reportedly shows that between September 8 and 16, Houthi forces dug approximately 20 kilometers of trenches in the mountains surrounding Bab al-Mandab. Comparison of photographs over the period clearly indicates new earthworks and fortifications appearing on the mountain slopes.

The Houthi fortifications are reportedly aimed at defending against a potential counterattack by Saudi-backed forces and improving observation posts overlooking the Bab al-Mandab Strait shipping lane.
