Iran Appoints New Defense Minister Amidst US Sanctions and Threats

Sunday, October 18, 2026 at 09:55 AM

Iran's parliament approved Mehrdad Ahlaqi Ketabchi as the new Minister of Defense, replacing Aziz Nasirzadeh, who was reportedly killed on February 28 in strikes by the US and the 'Zionist regime'. Ahlaqi, previously head of the country's Aerospace Industry Organization, is under US sanctions due to his involvement in Iran's missile program.

Ahlaqi stated that Iran is prepared for a potential US attack with the GBU-43/B 'Mother of All Bombs' and vowed to respond decisively. He also indicated plans to expand defense production, advance research, and strengthen the 'resistance front,' signaling Iran's intent to continue its confrontation with a US-led coalition.
