Japanese former Yakuza member joins Ukraine's frontline as sniper

Monday, October 5, 2026 at 04:58 PM

A Japanese national, identified as "Harusan," who previously spent 20 years with the Yakuza and served 10 years in prison, has joined the Ukrainian frontline as a sniper. He arrived in Ukraine on April 1, 2022, without knowing the language or having prior military experience.

Harusan, now 50, joined the Yakuza at 16 and left at 35. He is currently serving in the Georgian National Legion, communicating with fellow soldiers through gestures and a phone translator. He recently got a trident tattoo on his neck, symbolizing his resolve to fight for Ukraine. He believes Russia's aggression poses a threat to Moldova, Georgia, and Japan's future, and sees his service as atonement for his past.
