Poland Considers Banning Ukrainian Deputy Over Historical Commemoration
Poland's Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has initiated a request to declare Ukrainian regional council deputy Sviatoslav Sheremeta an undesirable person in Poland. Sheremeta proposed that 2027 be declared the Year of Roman Shukhevych in Lviv. Sikorski stated that Sheremeta is a reconstructor of the SS Galicia division, an advocate for the Year of Shukhevych, and a commander of the UPA who ordered the expulsion and killing of Poles.
The Lviv Regional Council voted to declare 2027 the Year of Shukhevych and the UPA. Sheremeta, head of the search enterprise 'Dolia', noted that regional councils have previously declared years honoring prominent figures and that this is not the first time Ukraine has declared a year for the UPA or Shukhevych. He also mentioned being declared persona non grata in Poland in 2017. Sheremeta expressed surprise at the reaction, stating that every nation has the right to honor its heroes who fought for Ukraine's independence.
