A report by The Financial Times suggests Russia's new Geran-5 drones are changing the air war in Ukraine, flying at speeds and altitudes that blur the line between drones and cruise missiles. This shift has reportedly reduced the effectiveness of Ukrainian air defense against these specific drones to around 60 percent, compared to 90-95 percent for other types, according to Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yurii Ihnat.

The Financial Times also noted that the West may be underestimating Russia's ability to transition from concept to serial production of these weapons. Separately, Reuters reported that Ukrainian interceptor drones failed to control aircraft at speeds above 400 km/h during trials, and Maksym Zhorin, deputy commander of Ukraine's 3rd Army Corps, stated on September 12 that Ukraine has lost the initiative with jet-powered drones.
