Russia lags in AI computing power race, report says
A report by ejdailyru suggests Russia is significantly behind in the race for AI computing power, particularly compared to Elon Musk's orbital data centers. SpaceX has unveiled its first AI1 satellite data center, with a solar panel span of 70 meters and a computational capacity of 150 kW, equivalent to one Nvidia server rack. Musk plans the first launch for Q4 2027 and mass production for 2028.
The primary challenge for these orbital data centers is heat dissipation, which can only be managed through radiation in a vacuum. The report estimates that launching 6,000 satellites for one gigawatt of capacity would cost approximately $43 billion, with Nvidia equipment alone costing $40-50 billion. Russia's current data centers for computing provide 1.8 GW, while China has around 30 GW and the US accounts for about 70% of global capacity.
