Russia: Need for 'Doomsday' Data Center After Ukrainian Drone Attacks

Thursday, October 15, 2026 at 10:31 AM

A Russian official has called for the construction of a "doomsday" data center to restore services following Ukrainian drone attacks on data centers in Russia. Valery Ermakov, deputy chairman of Rostelecom, stated that such a backup site is a "real need" in the current environment.

Ermakov noted that previous infrastructure in Russia prioritized efficiency and centralization but did not account for aerial attack threats. He explained that centralization has become a vulnerability, prompting a shift towards distributed architectures to spread services and reserve capacity, though Russia faces challenges in this transition.
