Russia seeks to extradite Israeli citizen for 1989 murder of Igor Talkov
Russian Investigative Committee (SK) is working on ways to secure the transfer of Valery Shlyafman to Russia to serve a sentence for the murder of Igor Talkov. Standard extradition procedures are not applicable as Shlyafman is an Israeli citizen, according to Yuri Yashkov, head of the SK's St. Petersburg investigative department.
Yashkov stated that Shlyafman did not obtain Russian citizenship after the USSR's collapse, having left for Israel and acquired citizenship there during the period of passport exchange. He also noted that the trial's length was due to the large number of witnesses needing verification and interrogation. The incident occurred 35 years ago, when Talkov was shot during a concert in St. Petersburg following a dispute between Shlyafman and the director of singer Aziza Malakhova over performance order. Shlyafman was found guilty in absentia by a Russian court in 2025 and sentenced to 13 years.
