Russian court sentences biologist to 3.5 years for donating to FBK
A Russian court sentenced Sofya Rosenfeld, a candidate of biological sciences and senior researcher at the Russian Academy of Sciences' Institute of Ecology and Evolution, to 3.5 years in prison for financing the "extremist" Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK). The Gagarin District Court of Moscow issued the ruling, which is related to two transfers of one thousand rubles each made by Rosenfeld in August and September 2021.
The prosecution had requested a five-year sentence for the scientist. Rosenfeld was taken into custody in the courtroom after the verdict was announced. She partially admitted guilt, not denying the transfers but stating she did not intend to support extremism. Rosenfeld claimed she was on a research expedition without communication and canceled her donation subscription immediately after learning of the FBK's status. Her defense submitted a letter to the fund requesting the cancellation of payments.
