Russian court sentences producer Kapitolina Averina to 6.5 years for inciting terrorism
A court sentenced journalist and television producer Kapitolina Averina to six and a half years in prison for public calls for terrorism. Sources familiar with the case told Sever.Realii that the charges stemmed from Averina's statements in Telegram chat groups, including a call to "bomb Moscow."
Averina's acquaintances told Sever.Realii that her comments were made in a state of affect after the death of her civilian husband, Yuri Stratiy, who served in the Ukrainian Armed Forces and died in May 2023 near Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region. Averina was detained on February 5, 2026, in Ivangorod, Leningrad Oblast, where she had gone to visit her sick mother. The FSB's investigation was conducted by its Kaluga Oblast department. She was held in pre-trial detention in Kaluga's SIZO-1. Following her detention, Averina was added to Rosfinmonitoring's list of terrorists and extremists.
