Russian forces reportedly captured the heavily fortified Ukrainian stronghold of Vuhledar after shifting tactics to pressure the city's flanks and supply lines. Ukrainian command confirmed the withdrawal of its units on October 2, citing the threat of encirclement.

The city had been a key Ukrainian defensive position for nearly two years. Russian forces, including units from the 36th Army and naval infantry brigades, engaged in sustained pressure on the flanks and communications after initial attempts to assault the city from the south proved unsuccessful. The capture is described as a significant step in a broader Russian offensive.
