Western media reports indicate a Russian military satellite, "Kosmos 2612," has approached within 136 meters of the European ICEYE-X36 radar imaging satellite. Experts suggest such close proximity in space could signify a collision or a deliberate targeting, with distances expected to decrease further.
A Dutch satellite tracking specialist noted that maneuvers began September 30 to align "Kosmos 2612" with ICEYE-X36's orbit. Astronomer Jonathan McDowell called it the first known instance of an active satellite making an unauthorized close approach to another in low Earth orbit. ICEYE has provided radar imagery to Ukraine since 2022, though its use by this specific satellite is unclear.
