Russian regions propose paying hunters to cull 100,000 bears amid rising attacks
Russian regions are preparing to cull approximately 100,000 bears, offering hunters up to 35,000 rubles per animal, according to a Mash report. This measure is being considered due to an increase in bear attacks. The Ministry of Natural Resources reported that 59 people were affected by bears in 2026, with six fatalities in the Krasnoyarsk Krai.
Currently, permits for bear hunting are valid for 30 days, requiring a new application if the animal is not taken within that period. This system, along with a fee of around 5,000 rubles, is proposed to be abolished. The plan is to make hunting for population control free and to pay hunters between 15,000 and 35,000 rubles per bear, depending on the region. These new rules could be implemented within 10-30 days in Buryatia, Tyva, Irkutsk Oblast, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Yakutia, Magadan Oblast, and Kamchatka.
