Russia's attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure threaten global food security, says EU Ambass

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 at 06:43 AM

Russia's targeted attacks on Ukraine's shipping, ports, logistics, and agricultural infrastructure are hindering the country's international trade and threatening global food security, according to EU Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Alesha Simkic. Before Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, Ukraine was a major global exporter of corn, wheat, barley, and sunflower oil, supplying North Africa and the Middle East.

The EU Ambassador to Kazakhstan noted that Russia is blocking Ukraine's grain transportation routes through the Black Sea, the Danube River, and land corridors. He stated that Russia's actions threaten the food security of millions worldwide, especially in a world where 7.8% of the population suffers from hunger.
