Ukraine is commemorating the victims of Babi Yar, a site of mass killings during the Holocaust and Nazi terror. On September 29 and 30, 1941, 33,771 Jews were killed there by Nazi punitive units, according to reports. The killings continued throughout the Nazi occupation of Kyiv.

The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance stated that approximately 100,000 people were killed in Babi Yar between 1941 and 1943. Babi Yar is described as a symbol of the "Holocaust by bullets," referring to mass killings that occurred near people's homes rather than in death camps.
