Ukraine's Ombudsman: Russia blocking civilian evacuation from Oleshky, Kherson region

Wednesday, September 16, 2026 at 08:00 PM

Russian forces have turned the occupied city of Oleshky in the Kherson region into a "death trap" by blocking civilian evacuation, according to Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets. Lubinets stated that a list of people for evacuation had been agreed upon, with the International Committee of the Red Cross ready to participate in a humanitarian mission, but Russian authorities have not confirmed its execution after negotiations.

The situation in Oleshky is critical, with over 6,000 people, including hundreds of children, believed to remain in and around the city. Residents are reportedly attempting to leave independently through minefields, risking artillery shelling or drone attacks.
