Ukrainian architect creates 3D models of cultural heritage damaged by Russian strikes
A 27-year-old architect, Ihor Tytarenko, is creating 3D models of historical buildings in Ukraine's Sumy region that have been damaged by Russian forces. Tytarenko and his team digitize architecture, explaining that even if buildings are destroyed, a digital copy will exist. This process, called photogrammetry, involves taking hundreds or thousands of photos of a building from all angles and stitching them together on a computer.
The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Yunakivka, a valuable architectural monument in the Sumy region, has been shelled multiple times by Russian forces since the full-scale invasion began. Ukrainian military personnel helped digitize the church, enabling Tytarenko's team to create a virtual model.
