A Ukrainian citizen, Lyubov Rozhanskaya, was detained at Astana airport after arriving from Istanbul, as Russia requested her detention through the CSTO. Rozhanskaya is currently in a pre-trial detention center, with a court hearing expected in the coming days.

The boy's stepfather's relatives contacted Rozhanskaya in the summer, offering to hand over the child. Her lawyers claim that the FSB was preparing documents for her search and extradition while negotiations were ongoing. A Russian case concerning an alleged attempt to abduct the child was initiated in 2023, and on August 27, a court in Kaliningrad issued an ex parte arrest warrant for Rozhanskaya. Her defense considers the event a planned FSB operation and provocation.
